Can Dental Implants Be Done in One Day?

Whether your tooth or teeth have fallen out, been extracted, or been knocked out, it’s a pain to deal with dental restoration. Things like biting, chewing, and dental care become much more difficult. If you have one or more missing teeth, you’ll want to consult with a dentist to determine the best replacement option for your oral health, appearance, and more.

When it comes to teeth replacements, there are a couple of main options—dentures and full arch dental implants. For a long-lasting, strong replacement option, you’ll want to consider implants. But how long does the implant process take? Can they be done same-day? And what exactly are dental implants?

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium rods that are implanted in the jawbone of a patient to hold a false tooth or teeth in place via an abutment. Sometimes dental implants are used to replace a single tooth, while other times an entire row of teeth may be held in place with the help of multiple implants.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

There are plenty of major benefits to dental implants. Some of these benefits include:

  •   Strength. If you have the choice, you’ll want to go with a stronger tooth replacement option. While dentures can provide some of the support you need to bite and chew, they aren’t as strong. Because of this, you’ll be more limited. With implants, you can continue to bite and chew many of your favorite foods without worry.
  •   Speech. If you’ve been missing your tooth or teeth for a while, you may have noticed a change in your speech patterns and the way you sound when you speak. By replacing this missing tooth or teeth, you won’t have to worry about your speech patterns changing.
  •   Stopping teeth migration. Over time, if you have missing teeth, your healthy teeth will begin to shift and migrate. This can lead to a variety of different oral health issues that include impacting, migration, and crowding. Having a dental implant or implants in place will stop your teeth from migrating and keep them in place.
  •   Longevity. Some replacement methods aren’t long-term. You’ll need to replace them more often, which means ongoing costs. While you will need to change out your dental crowns for your implants, the implants themselves should last you a lifetime. This leads to savings in the long run.
  •   Ongoing oral health. As your teeth shift and migrate, they become more difficult to take care of. Brushing and flossing certain areas can be very difficult—if not impossible. Because of this, you may end up with tooth decay and gum disease. Stopping your teeth from migrating with dental implants will help you to take better care of your ongoing oral health.
  •   Bone preservation. Something many people don’t even consider when it comes to their oral health is their jawbone. If you have a missing tooth or teeth, your jawbone will begin to deteriorate over time. A dental implant fuses with the jawbone, which helps to maintain the integrity of the bone.
  •   Appearance. No one likes having a big gap in their smile! Dental implants will fill in the gap and give you a natural, healthy-looking smile. This can lead to a boost in your self-confidence and overall mood.

Can Dental Implants Be Done in One Day?

Whether dental implants can be placed in one day isn’t a straightforward answer. “Same-day implants” exist but they aren’t always the best solution. Some of the pros of same-day implants are how quick they are to place, the ease of them fusing to the bone, an easier process of healing for the gums, and more. The downsides, though, are that they have a higher chance of failure than traditional implants, the procedure is longer during the individual procedure, the discomfort after the procedure is more severe, and the implant process can be tough for those with a compromised immune system.

Speak with your dentist about whether same-day implants or traditional options are right to meet your budget, needs, and oral health.

The Traditional Dental Implant Placement Process

The dental implant placement process starts with an appointment with your general dentistry specialist. The dentist will take a look at your teeth, jawbone, and gums. They will examine the area where the tooth is missing. If your tooth is damaged or severely decayed, they will consider whether or not an extraction is required. If possible, they will save your tooth. If not, they will schedule you for an extraction.

If your dentist notices your jawbone is too weak for a dental implant, they may suggest either dentures or a jawbone graft procedure. During a bone graft, your dentist will use your bone, the bone of a donor, or other options to graft the bone so it can regenerate over time. If the procedure goes well, your dentist will be able to place the implants afterward.

The first phase of a traditional dental implant procedure is installing the titanium rod into the jawbone surgically. A few months will be given for the implant to fuse with the jawbone. This process generally takes around 4-6 months. Once the implant has fused, your dentist will attach a false tooth via an abutment. At this point, you’re done!

Once you’ve finished with the placement, make sure you continue to take good care of your oral health. While the dental crown is a prosthetic, your surrounding teeth and gums are not. Brush, floss, and rinse the area just like you would if the tooth was natural. This will help with the longevity of the implant and ensure you don’t need any extractions in the future.
